Cultural Intelligence for Indians Working with Americans

Posted On: October 6, 2025

India’s multicultural legacy offers a powerful foundation for global collaboration. At Authentic Journeys, we support Indians working with Americans to develop cultural intelligence (CQ) and thrive in cross-cultural roles. In today’s interconnected workplace, Indian teams partnering with American colleagues benefit from cultural fluency—skills that help navigate communication styles, align expectations, and build lasting trust. This article explores how CQ transforms collaboration and strengthens professional relationships across borders.

Why Cultural Intelligence Matters for Indians Working with Americans

Cultural intelligence (CQ) is the ability to relate to, work with, and perform effectively across cultures. For Indians working with Americans, CQ helps teams interpret communication patterns, understand workplace norms, and foster meaningful relationships. Even highly skilled professionals can face challenges without cultural fluency. CQ empowers teams to communicate clearly, collaborate confidently, and build trust—creating a strategic advantage in client-facing and collaborative roles.

Many professionals assume that workplace skills can be applied anywhere. After all, aren’t professional skills universal, especially in an increasingly globalized world? Yet, just as the corporate culture at JPMorgan Chase or Goldman Sachs may feel different in Salt Lake City compared to New York City, the work culture in New York will differ from that in Bangalore. These differences aren’t just organizational—they’re shaped by local norms, values, and communication styles.

While some companies have adapted and thrived in Salt Lake City despite initial concerns, others choose Utah precisely for its cultural environment. A prime example is DX. In a 2025 interview with the Salt Lake Tribune, Co-founder Abi Noda explained why he built DX in Utah’s Silicon Slopes rather than in a major tech hub:

“[I didn’t want to build DX in a] crazy tech hub, with just tech people,” he said. [Instead, he chose to grow the company in] a “smaller but very supportive community” rather than “chasing after venture capital dollars” in saturated West Coast markets. As DX developed software to measure the productivity of software developers and engineers, Noda added, “I wanted a place that was pretty grounded in real life, reality.”

This kind of regional variation isn’t unique to the U.S. Even within India, local work cultures shape professional behavior. During my time at EY across Kochi, Trivandrum, and Bangalore in the mid 2010s, I noticed distinct differences in the pace of daily work, hierarchy, and communication preferences. Kochi leaned toward a more relaxed rhythm and collaborative tone, Trivandrum emphasized formal structures and protocol, while Bangalore moved faster and favored direct, tech-driven exchanges. These nuances shaped everything from meeting dynamics to decision-making.

Understanding how local culture shapes professional behavior—whether in Salt Lake City or Bangalore—is essential for Indians working with Americans. It helps clarify expectations, build rapport, and foster more effective cross-border collaboration.

Leveraging India’s Multicultural Legacy

India’s rich diversity—across languages, regions, religions, and work styles—naturally equips professionals with adaptability and empathy. Many Indian teams already navigate cultural differences internally, making them well-prepared to engage across borders.
